TEHRAN, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Iran and the three European powers, Britain, France and Germany, known as the E3, held a new round of talks on Tehran's nuclear issue the previous day, Iranian authorities said on Friday.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told the semi-official Tasnim News Agency that the talks, held at the expert level in Geneva on Thursday, aimed to discuss various aspects of Iran's nuclear program and the lifting of sanctions on the country.
Also on Friday, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, announced the same news in a post on social platform X, saying that the "specialized and technical" talks between Tehran and the E3 were in line with the agreements reached in their fourth round of negotiations.
Iran and the E3 initiated their talks in September on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The fourth round of the talks was held in Geneva in late February.
Iran signed a nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with six major countries -- Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States -- in July 2015, accepting restrictions on its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
However, the United States withdrew from the deal in May 2018 and reinstated sanctions, prompting Iran to scale back some of its nuclear commitments. Efforts to revive the nuclear deal have not achieved substantial progress.
